Guide to the Bar Exam
Character References (Q45)

Question 45 on the NCBE Character & Fitness application for Oklahoma requires you to provide at least six references. No one related to you, by blood or marriage, or anyone who currently lives with you. Do not provide names of supervisors or mentors that you previously listed in your Employment History. Due to the difficulty of finding six references that are not related or already listed in your employment history, we have provided the guidance below to help find additional references if you need help.

  • Look to your professional network. Although you can't use previously listed supervisors from the employment history section you can reach out to other colleagues, supervisors, or mentors from previous jobs or internships.
  • If you've done volunteer work or freelance projects related to your field, the people you've worked with could serve as references.
  • Consider your professors, academic advisors or instructors from undergraduate or graduate school. They may be able to provide references regarding your relevant skills and knowledge.
  • Use your connections on LinkedIn or other professional connections you have made on social media.
  • If you are part of a community group or church you can ask teachers or pastors there for a reference regarding your character and or skills.

NOTE: Make sure to provide current contact information for these references. (Email address, mailing address, and telephone number)
